Hundreds of thousands of students from around the world have participated in our contests over the 13 years we’ve been running them, creating podcasts, writing editorials, making videos, reviewing arts and culture, composing narratives, investigating scientific phenomena, and more.
Teachers tell us they value these challenges because they invite students to take the skills they learn in school and use them to create for an authentic audience. Students tell us they like the variety of ways they can express themselves — and, of course, the confidence boost when they are recognized for their efforts. For us, these contests deepen our daily mission: to help teenagers engage with what’s happening in the world, and prove to them that their voices and ideas matter.
But every year we rethink our calendar to keep it fresh. We try to create a balance that responds to the needs of our audience, but also promotes a range of expression, appeals to a broad group of students, and draws inspiration from features across The Times.
That’s how we’ve arrived at the offerings we announce below, and we hope you’ll be as excited about them as we are. Here is what you need to know:
- Our fall lineup includes classics, like our Review Contest, as well as new opportunities, like the One-Pager Challenge. We’re also bringing back the Narrative and Coming of Age Contests, but with a few twists. Find more details below.
- Stay tuned for our spring offerings, which we will add to this page later this year.
- This year our contests are open only to middle and high schoolers who are 13-19 years old, but, as always, teenagers around the world are invited to participate.
- As each contest goes live, we will add a link on this page.
- For those contests that have run in the past, you can learn more now by clicking on the “Rules and Guidelines” for each, and taking a look at both the related unit and the work of previous student winners. For those that are new or have been updated, we will post related resources before the contest begins.

Coming of Age in 2022: An Image Contest for Teenagers
What can you show us that might help explain what it’s like to be a teenager right now?
We’ve been asking that question annually since the pandemic began, and the answers have been extraordinary. This year we’re again inviting teenagers to document, reflect and express themselves on any aspect, big or small, of what it’s like to grow up now — but this time we’re asking you to do it via images only.
Students can submit photos, paintings, drawings, illustrations, comics, cartoons, graphics, screenshots or anything else that can be captured in a still image. Each image must be accompanied by a short artist’s statement. More details will publish soon, but until then take a look at the winning visual work from 2020 and 2021, as well as in this additional collection of teenage mentor texts.
